Panarea Travel Guide

Panarea is the smallest of the Aeolian Islands and the most exclusive in the Mediterranean: no cars, whitewashed alleyways, bougainvilleas and an intensely blue sea. A place you visit once and never forget.

This guide covers everything you need to plan your Panarea holiday: the best beaches, things to do, the ideal season, how to get around and practical tips to make the most of the island.

When to Visit Panarea

June & September — Ideal

Mild weather, warm sea, far fewer crowds than peak season. Lower prices. The perfect window for those seeking peace without sacrificing good weather.

July & August — Peak Season

The liveliest period: nightlife, events and frequent ferry connections. Also the most crowded and expensive. Booking months ahead is essential.

May — Low Season

The island wakes up. Pleasant weather, flowers in bloom, very few tourists. Some accommodation and restaurants may not yet be open.

October — End of Season

Panarea empties out and most services close. Only suitable for those seeking true solitude and lucky enough to find open accommodation.

Panarea's Best Beaches

Cala Junco

Panarea's most iconic beach and one of the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean. A sweep of white pebbles on crystal-clear water that shifts from emerald green to deep turquoise. Reachable on foot in around 20–25 minutes from the port via a scenic path, or by boat.

→ Don't miss the sunset view from Punta Milazzese, right above the cove.

Caletta Beach

The small beach near the port, convenient and reachable on foot in just a few minutes from the centre. Ideal for a quick swim or for guests staying in the Caletta area. Less dramatic than Cala Junco but very practical.

Fumarole Beach

One of the most unusual beaches in the Aeolian Islands: underwater geothermal activity naturally warms the water, creating small bubbles and an unexpected temperature. Reachable on foot or by boat — a unique experience worth having at least once.

Drautto Beach

A more secluded pebble beach, best reached by boat or after a short walk. Perfect for those seeking quiet and crystal-clear water away from the crowds.

Things to Do in Panarea

1

Visit the Prehistoric Village of Punta Milazzese

A Bronze Age settlement dating to around 1300 BC, with circular stone huts perched directly above the sea. The walk out to the point is one of the island's finest: about 20 minutes from the port, with sweeping views over Cala Junco and the surrounding islets.

2

Boat trip to the islets

Dattilo, Basiluzzo, Lisca Bianca and Bottaro are uninhabited volcanic islets with spectacular underwater scenery. Several operators from the port run day trips with snorkeling stops. Not to be missed.

3

Snorkeling and diving

The waters around Panarea are among the richest in the Aeolian Islands: posidonia meadows, moray eels, octopus and colourful fish. The area around Lisca Bianca and the submarine fumaroles is particularly interesting for divers.

4

Evening stroll along the waterfront

Walking from the port towards the village centre, with views of the islets at sunset, is one of Panarea's finest moments. The Bridge Bar is the island's traditional gathering point for aperitivo.

5

Day trip to Stromboli

From Panarea you can reach Stromboli by hydrofoil to witness the volcano's nighttime eruptions — one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles in the Mediterranean. Booking a guide in advance is mandatory.

Getting Around the Island

On foot

The main way to explore Panarea. The island is tiny: from the port to the village centre takes 5 minutes, and the main beaches 20–30 minutes. Bring comfortable shoes.

Electric golf cart

The only motorised vehicle allowed on the island. Rentals are available locally or you can book a "taxi cart" for luggage transfers. Useful if your accommodation is further from the port.

Boat / water taxi

To reach less accessible beaches or the surrounding islets. Several operators at the port offer water taxis and boat hire with or without skipper.

Practical Tips

  • Book well in advance. Vacation rentals and restaurants fill up fast in high season. For July and August, book at least 3–4 months ahead.
  • Check the weather before boarding. Hydrofoil services can be suspended in windy or rough conditions. Always build some flexibility into your return schedule.

Where to Eat in Panarea

Panarea has only a handful of restaurants, but some are truly unforgettable. The most beloved on the island is Ristorante Da Pina.

Ristorante Da Pina

Authentic Aeolian cuisine, fresh local produce and a terrace overlooking the sea. Da Pina is a Panarea institution, beloved by the island's regulars for generations. Booking ahead is essential — especially in July and August.
